HISTORY OF FRANCIACORTA

The history of Franciacorta has very ancient roots in a region where viticulture has always been a constant: from the Roman era to the late antique period, and throughout the Middle Ages, the pedoclimatic conditions have always favored the growth of vineyards.

A small area in the province of Brescia that has become the second most important region in the world for classic method sparkling wines.

The name Franciacorta first appears referring to the ‘curtes francae’, the free courts exempt from duties. In 1809, the Napoleonic cadastral records certify the existence of nearly 1,000 hectares of vineyards in Franciacorta, showing that even then, wine was produced not only for personal consumption but also for sale. In 1961, the first bottle of Franciacorta, the “Pinot di Franciacorta – Méthode Champenoise”, was created by the winemaker Franco Ziliani. In November 1991, the Franciacorta brand was registered in Italy. In 1995, the consortium logo became the sole identification of the Franciacorta DOCG, the first Italian brut to receive the recognition.
